Times Letters: Sunak’s Plan to Cut Income Taxes and Sales Taxes | comment

S.ir, After the Chancellor weathered the storms caused by the breaking of important tax obligations from the Conservative Party’s manifesto of 2019, the Chancellor is now signaling which taxes he wants to cut and how much before the parliamentary elections in 2024 (“Sunak Plan to Reduce of Taxes, ”News, Dec. 4, and Editorial,“ Tax Problem, ”Dec. 3).

On one level, that makes perfect sense. It holds out the prospect of a traffic jam tomorrow for a constituency tired of restrictions and hardships and hungry for good news. More specifically, it can appease voters whose confidence has been shaken by a range of unenforced mistakes, from filth to parties on Downing Street. That could also mitigate the damage in upcoming by-elections.
