Malta and Bechtel join forces to accelerate long-term energy storage adoption | news

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., December 1, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Malta Inc., a leading developer of grid-scale energy storage, and Bechtel Corporation, one of the world’s most respected engineering, construction and project management companies, announced today that they are teaming up to develop new energy storage projects around the world. The companies will work together on development and deployment Malta’s 10-150+ hours of energy storage technology in a variety of grid-scale applications.

“The collaboration with Bechtel fits in perfectly Malta,” called Al Morales, CFO of Malta. “Bechtel’s deep understanding of that Malta System components, broad presence and customer base as well as a proven track record in executing successful projects will help Malta to accelerate and smooth the energy transition. “

Bechtel and Malta intend to identify and use opportunities for the use of long-term energy storage systems that store electricity for days or weeks and thus convert the intermittent electricity from sun and wind into reliable, needs-based base load electricity. The goal is that Malta Carbon-free electricity generation system to decarbonize industrial, agricultural, construction and other sectors.

“We look forward to working with Malta to advance the use of its innovative and scalable storage solution, which enables the further global expansion of the portfolio for the generation of renewable energies. The lack of long-term energy storage solutions remains a key challenge for the renewable energy industry, “said Bechtel’s industry leader for renewable energies Scott Austin. “There is no panacea for decarbonization, and Bechtel is committed to leveraging our engineering and design expertise to support the rapid advancement of technology solutions that can usefully advance the transition to a net-zero environment.”

The collaboration will focus on short-term measures to jointly develop a portfolio of long-term energy storage projects. The goal of the team is determined by the Malta Key attributes of the system:

  • Portfolio integration: the Malta System can consolidate and integrate variable renewable energies into existing generation portfolios, allowing much more solar and wind power to be added and making it easier for utilities to achieve decarbonization goals and targets.
  • Conversion of fossil resources: The Malta The system can be integrated with decommissioned fossil fuel plants such as coal-fired power plants to reuse existing infrastructure, prevent job loss and preserve the tax base of local communities.
  • Clean economic centers: The Malta System can serve as a clean power and heat hub to provide clean energy to existing C&I businesses and districts, enable economic development, and attract new business investment from the digital, agricultural and industrial sectors.
  • Storage as transmission: The Malta can be installed on the transmission network to optimize the existing infrastructure and drastically increase the efficiency of new investments.
