Welsh motorists are slowing down the journey to work as MORE THAN launches the new “Low Miler” auto insurance

One in five (22%) drivers predict that they will use their car less, even if restrictions are lifted completely, with a quarter (25%) driving fewer miles to commute.

According to the car insurer MORE THAN, the pandemic has started today in response to the emergence of two different types of drivers – “low mile” and “higher mile” drivers.

As COVID-19 restrictions abate, MORE THAN shows that 22% of Welsh motorists expect less use of their car over the next year, compared to pre-pandemic levels, online delivery services (35%) and permanent changes in their work behavior (23 %) as the main reasons why they will drive less cars in the future.

A quarter (25%) of drivers in Wales say they will drive fewer kilometers to work than they did before the pandemic. Across the UK, those who say they will drive less to commute to work expect to commute an average of 75 days less – or 1,044 kilometers less – per year than before the pandemic. Those in the financial and legal sectors expect the biggest drop in kilometers on their daily commute, compared to pre-pandemic levels.

However, some changes in our daily routines caused by the pandemic will remain. Of the Welsh drivers surveyed by MORE THAN, one in five (21%) said they will use their car less for daily errands and less often for a weekly grocery store over the next year. However, 32% intend to drive more often to visit family and friends, while 30% expect to use their car for more one-off day and weekend trips.

The average number of miles traveled by the British has been steadily declining for two decades, with the latest UK National Travel Survey showing that average miles traveled fell from 9,200 miles in 2002 to 7,600 miles in 2018, an average of 5,926 miles a year 2021, according to MORE THAN, up from an average of 7,018 miles in 2019.

Anthony Aronin, Head of Telematics Insurance at MORE THAN said, “The way we drive and use our cars will not be the same for some after this pandemic. With more flexible working conditions and less commuting, some people are likely to drive less. With this need in mind, we want to make sure everyone has access to insurance that best suits their needs. For this reason, we are introducing MORE THAN Low Miler, an innovative way of linking awards to the miles that customers drive and making a fairer offer for those who drive fewer miles. “

MORE THAN’s usage-based product, Low Miler, was developed in collaboration with global vehicle and data driving company IMS (Insurance & Mobility Solutions) and uses a smart device to provide a fairer way to offer auto insurance to those who use their car less or less travel shorter distances.

MORE THAN Low Miler customers choose a mileage allowance for the year up to a maximum of 7,000 miles and then receive a device that is plugged into the vehicle via a socket in the car or under the hood. The device tracks the mileage of the customers, updates them regularly about the kilometers driven and allows them to buy top-up miles if necessary.

The benefits of fewer miles are also uncovered by the MORE THAN study: 81% of Welsh drivers who intend to drive less say they can save more money on gas, while 54% say driving short is better for the environment. 15% say driving less often reduces the chance of getting angry in traffic.

Bob Skerrett, CEO of IMS, Insurance Division, said, “We have built a strong relationship with MORE THAN as a provider of connected insurance technology and the mile-based approach is the best way forward at this stage in the insurance revolution. Without a doubt, Low Miler is the right product at the right time. The partnership reflects our international experience, especially in North America, where we provide the technology for similar insurance products. “

MORE THAN’s Low Miler will complement its existing auto insurance products to offer policies that best suit their needs, as 43% of drivers surveyed expect their mileage to return to pre-pandemic levels and 28% even expect an increase .

MORE THAN has also worked with IMS for the past five years on their product SMART WHEELS, which offers black box insurance for young drivers.
