Finland’s energy turnaround is set to start with the country’s largest wind project with 455 MW in Lestijärvi. be accelerated
- The 455 MW Lestijärvi project with Swedish developer OX2 is scheduled to be installed in 2024
- The site uses 69 SG 6.6-170 turbines that offer competitive LCOE
- When completed, the project will produce around 2% of the country’s electricity production
- Lestijärvi is the second project signed for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform in Finland in 2021
- A A 35-year full scope service contract was also concluded
Siemens Gamesa has signed a 455 MW contract with Swedish developer OX2 to deliver its leading Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform to the Lestijärvi site for Finland’s largest wind farm of all time, which will help the country take a giant leap in its energy transition close.
The wind project will use 69 of the SG 6.6-170 turbines, which are to be installed at the location in Central Ostrobothnia in 2024. Equipped with a 170 meter rotor and 6.6 MW generator, the wind turbines offer one of the lowest energy costs (LCoE) in the industry.
This is the second Finnish site that Siemens Gamesa 5.X will use after an 81 MW deal for the SG 6.6-155 variant was signed in early 2021. Annual energy production will be around 1.3 terawatt hours, which is around two percent corresponds to the total electricity production in Finland.
The wind farm is also covered by a 35-year full-scope service contract, which ensures that the turbines are operated at maximum capacity for their entire service life. A total of 64 turbines will sit on 155-meter towers, the other five will use 145-meter towers.
“This contract is an important step for the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform in Finland. Working with long-term partner OX2, we’re helping the country make great strides in its energy transition by offering one of the lowest LCoE in the industry. The Nordic countries are once again showing great appetite for using leading technology to deliver competitive green energy, ” said Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s Onshore Business Unit.
According to the Finnish Wind Power Association, Finland plans to install 30 TWh of wind capacity by 2030, which would cover around 30 percent of the country’s electricity needs, up from around 7 percent at the end of 2019.
“We look forward to continuing our longstanding collaboration with Siemens Gamesa on this flagship project in Finland. The selected turbines enable us to optimally exploit the full potential of the area
and provides the Nordic energy mix with significant amounts of low-cost green electricity over the long term, “said Paul Stormoen, CEO of OX2.
