Utah may be known for many good things, but excellent health insurance is not one of them.
Last year, the Deseret News reported that more than half of all Utahners have difficulty affording health care. A report compiled by the Altarum Healthcare Value Hub provided evidence that the state is in trouble.
“Utah has relatively low per capita health spending, but is among the worst in the country when it comes to the percentage of residents who report affordability issues,” the report said.
Regardless of their financial situation, a family shouldn’t have to worry about getting the care they need. If you’re one of those people struggling to get health insurance, a nationwide program may be able to help.
The best part? It can’t cost you anything.
The health insurance premium support program
The Health Insurance Premium Support (HIPS) program provides affordable to free health insurance for eligible individuals. If you meet the eligibility requirements, HIPS will pay all or part of your monthly health insurance premium. As soon as you are enrolled at HIPS, a monthly check for all or part of your premium will be sent to your health insurance company. Those who qualify don’t pay more than $ 20 a month for health insurance.
Although some hospitals offer financial assistance, individuals can still be caught at large out of pocket expenses. Health insurance through the HIPS program provides access to preventive care and services like physical therapy and medication coverage – not just emergency care.
“While uninsured patients can get affordable basic care at a community health center, they often face enormous financial burdens following a serious illness, emergency, or other specialty care not offered by a health center,” said Alan Pruhs , Executive Director of AUCH, said about the program.
“HIPS helps reduce or reduce the cost of health insurance premiums for working individuals and families so that they can rest easy in the event of a medical emergency.”
If you meet the requirements, you can register with your local health center. A matriculation specialist will guide you through the process and enroll you for free. (To find registration help near you, click here.)
Who is eligible for HIPS?
The HIPS program provides financial assistance to eligible individuals who enroll for a qualifying health insurance plan through the Health Insurance Marketplace. The program is aimed at low-income people and families whose financial situation makes it difficult to obtain health insurance.
So that you know if you qualify, here are the eligibility requirements for the HIPS program:
- You must be a resident of Utah.
- You must have an eligible income. (Your income must be below a certain threshold per month or per year, with guidelines set according to household size.)
- You must be authorized to register for a qualified health insurance on the marketplace of the federal health insurance.
- If selected, you must select a Silver plan from the Marketplace.
Get instant insurance coverage during the special enrollment period
Once you apply for the program, you may wonder how soon your coverage will start. The good news is you don’t have to wait for the open enrollment season. Thanks to the current government special registration deadline, you can now register for Marketplace Health Insurance until August 15th.
Special registration deadlines also apply after certain life events, such as B. Loss of health insurance, relocation, marriage or the birth of a child.
What other services do community health centers offer if you don’t qualify for HIPS?
Even if you don’t qualify for the HIPS program, community health centers are a great resource if you need medical attention. Health centers have provided comprehensive and preventive basic care for everyone for over 50 years – regardless of your insurance status.
If you are not eligible for HIPS or Marketplace coverage, a registration specialist can help you with other insurance options that you may be eligible for.
