SHELTON, Conn., June 10, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Budderfly, the fastest growing company in the North American energy efficiency-as-a-service market, today announced that Outlaw Enterprises, Inc. has selected its energy efficiency solutions to reduce lighting costs and HVAC and cooling improve efficiency in 13 KFC, Taco Bell, and combined KFC / Taco Bell franchise restaurants across South Carolina.

The company saw margins and profitability shrink due to rising industry-related costs and sought to offset those increases by optimizing the efficiency of lighting, cooling and refrigeration equipment.
“The lighting and cooling equipment met our needs but was not working as efficiently as I wanted it to be,” said Ashley Page, Operations Director, Outlaw Enterprises. “Replacing the device with newer technology at once was not an option because of the high costs.” Page found his ideal solution in the free energy efficiency upgrades from Budderfly.
In collaboration with Budderfly, Outlaw Enterprises, Inc. started a pilot program in May 2021 with four KFCs and one KFC / Taco Bell location. The program included:
- Conversion of all exterior, interior and parking lot lighting to LEDs with lower power
- Add advanced walk-in cooling controls for improved visibility and efficiency
- Install frequency converters (VFDs) and reaction chips to improve HVAC operations
- Installation of intelligent thermostats for better temperature control
- Adding submetering IoT devices for advanced measurement and monitoring functions
Since the pilot, Outlaw Enterprises has expanded its Budderfly relationship to all of the franchise’s remaining locations, converting all restaurants to LED lighting, and upgrading many HVAC units to meet these improvements in the pilot. For the remaining HVAC units, Budderfly will upgrade them with new, highly efficient units at the end of their useful life – at no additional cost.
“We have been contacted by other energy efficiency companies in the past. They identified our energy problems and asked us to prepay all technology costs with no guarantees that this would save us the offer they indicated. In order for Budderfly to cover all upgrade costs, keep their promises quoted and show cost saving results immediately, was a very refreshing change from what I’ve seen from others, “added Page.
Outlaw Enterprises is located in Camden, South Carolina, and is part of YUM! Branded Quick Service Restaurants (QSRs) franchises. In 1964, Johnny Outlaw Sr. became a KFC franchisee with a restaurant in Camden at its Greyhound bus station and expanded the franchise over the years. Ashley is the current franchisee’s son-in-law Johnny outlaw jr.; and for the past 10 years, the Ashley-led franchise has grown through land purchases and two newly built restaurants. Today, Outlaw Enterprises Inc. operates over a dozen KFC and Taco Bell locations.
“Many QSRs are struggling with rising costs due to rising ingredient prices and supply chain issues,” said Al Subbloie, CEO, Budderfly. “Budderfly’s ability to cover all physical upgrade costs and amortize the investment over time through a percentage of the monthly energy savings enables our customers to immediately reduce operating costs and offset rising prices in other areas.”
Budderfly’s EEaaS solution is also helping Outlaw Enterprises contribute to their parent company, YUM! Brands’ initiative to balance business growth with environmental sustainability.
