App works with schools to visualize financial planning

The Muskegon Region Middle School District partners with The Beans, a finance company that provides schools and nonprofits across the country with a web application for creating personalized visual financial planning.

The Beans was founded in 2016 by former Oxford teacher and researcher Melissa Pancoast. In addition to the app, which tracks expenses, savings and priorities based on trends in an individual’s bank account, workshops are offered which, according to Pancoast, are based on the work she has done at the University of Oxford in England.

“All of the work is evidence-based and has been shown to reduce the financial burden,” she said. “The workshop introduces basic concepts and principles for financial wellbeing. The app supports this with software and technology that creates a very simple financial plan and supports you positively and proactively to stay on track. . Our app and workshops are both very appealing. Things are brisk and people are seeing their money and it’s a very different experience than interacting with your money in numbers or in spreadsheets. “
